Stonefield Hospital perform all invasive diagnostic or interventional procedures in our Cardiac Catheterisation Lab (Cath Lab).

All procedures are performed by caring and highly skilled Consultants, Nurses and Physiologists and the department is equipped with the most up-to-date diagnostic and interventional tools available.
An angiogram uses X-ray with injectable contrast to examine your coronary arteries. This provides your consultant with high-quality, accurate information on whether you have a narrowing or blockage in one or more of your coronary arteries, whether further treatment is required and what treatment might be best for you.

Upon arriving in the Cath Lab, ECG electrodes will be applied to monitor your heart during the procedure and your wrist or groin area will be cleaned and draped in a sterile cover. Your consultant will inject a local anaesthetic and will insert one or more very narrow tubes into your artery and up into the heart. They will use this tube to guide the contrast into each coronary artery and will record images of the artery during each injection.

After all the images have been obtained and the procedure has finished, pressure will be applied to the site at the wrist or groin to prevent bleeding. You will be discharged later the same day after speaking with your consultant.

Patients referred to the Cardiac Cath Lab will be admitted under the care of a Consultant Cardiologist, who will perform all invasive diagnostic or interventional procedures. There is no need for patients to bring referral documentation on the day of the procedure.
